The Old Library @BD

Library history

The Old Library in Bonnie Doon was originally in the Mechanics Institute, As noted in the ‘Historical Aspects of Bonnie Doon’ (page 59-60)

“A meeting was held in the Mechanics Institue in April 1902 for the purpose of forming a public library. It was decided that subscription would be 1/6 pence a quarter and that the libtrarian (mr Kerr) would be paid 1/-per hour. When the Mechanics Institute was offered for sale by auction at the Mansfield sale yards on 10th May, `1929, plans were made for the building of a separate library and on 27th February, 1931 the Doon library was opened. This building is now situated in the new town …”

In 1998, The BD Old Library was moved once again this time to its present site on the community grounds to be part of the Community Centre, where it continues to offer a free library service for all local residents.

The building was moved, refurbished, and re-established thanks to the hard work of the Bonnie Doon Community Group Inc’s efforts and raising of funds to complete the project. This project was initiated not only as a valuable part of the preservation of our local history, but also reestablished the promotion of literacy with free books to read, and furthermore it created a beautiful community meeting space and venue for activities. This space is currently used for many purposes, including meetings, social functions, exercise classes, and much more, and can be hired out to external organisations for functions (contact us below).

And so, while the original librarian – Mr. Kerr’s early 1900s role was indeed salaried, our current free library service is staffed/managed entirely by a volunteer library administrator who is a lovely local in our community.

Our Library administration asks that you take the time to please watch this short information video on how to join, and how to borrow books before visiting our library, so you understand our borrowing process and it will make your first borrowing experience smooth and easy!

Navigate through our catalogue

Whilst we don’t have a huge selection of book categories due to size and community interest, we have a small but fun selection of different books and interests. The Old Library catalogue extends into the Function Room in the Community Centre – with many comfy chairs and book reading nooks to welcome you should you wish to come read for a few hours.

Also, you can now browse our catalogue right here ‘online’ to find the right book before coming in making it easier to find what you want.
